Before Surgery

  • Do not eat or drink anything 7 hours before surgery (including water, gum, or candy).
  • No smoking 12 hours before and after surgery.
  • No alcohol 24 hours before and after surgery.
  • Medication restrictions: Consult your doctor for any medication guidelines.
  • Aspirin: Do not take aspirin 48 hours before surgery unless advised by your doctor.

Things To Remember

  • Bring:
    • Your insurance card.
    • Two major forms of identification (e.g., driver's license, state ID, or passport).
  • Leave at home:
    • All jewelry and valuables.
    • Remove all body piercings.
  • Transportation:
    • An adult must drive you home after surgery; you will not be permitted to drive yourself.
    • Ideally, have an adult stay with you after surgery to assist with recovery.
  • Personal care:
    • Do not wear makeup, nail polish, bath oils, lotions, or powders. Deodorant is allowed.
    • Avoid shaving the surgical site to prevent skin irritation and possible infection.
    • Glasses/contacts and dentures may need to be removed prior to surgery; bring a case for these items.
  • Pre-surgery hygiene:
    • Shower with antibacterial soap (like Dial or Lever) the evening before and on the day of surgery before arriving.
  • Clothing:
    • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes that are easy to put on and take off.

After Surgery

If sedation was administered, you may experience mild effects for a few hours after the procedure. Follow these precautions unless instructed otherwise by your doctor:

  • Alcohol: Avoid alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours.
  • Driving: Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after returning home.
  • Legal/major decisions: Refrain from making any significant decisions for 24 hours after returning home.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience nausea or vomiting.
  • Activity:
    • Avoid strenuous physical activities until you are seen by your doctor or surgeon.
    • Climb stairs slowly and carefully, as you may tire easily.
    • Do not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds.
  • Diet:
    • Gradually return to a normal diet over the next day or two.
    • Avoid spicy, greasy, or heavy meals during this time.
